Have you ever felt like you were hanging on by a thread, desperately clinging to hope in the face of overwhelming circumstances? The Bible tells a powerful story of a woman who found healing and restoration by simply touching the hem of Jesus' garment. In this blog post, we'll explore the significance of this story and how it can inspire us to seek comfort and strength in Jesus, even when we feel at our lowest.
The Woman with the issue of blood
There's a story in the Bible about a woman with what is described as an issue of blood. (See her story in Luke 8:43-48)
Doctors, healers, priests, people who claimed to have any sort of healing power had attended to her. But none could heal her. Her situation left her isolated, rejected and alone. She was socially drained, shunned by those around her and unable to get close to anyone for fear of their uncleanliness. She was left to just 'exist' as everyone else around her lived their lives.
She found hope in Jesus at the hem of His garment
Somehow she heard about Jesus and His love. She heard of His healing power and about how He didn't turn anyone away.
"Could He heal me?" She reasoned in her mind.
She took a chance. She had so much faith. She believed that she didn't need to hear Him say any words, she didn't even need to see His face. All she needed was to touch the hem of His garment.
I imagine her pushing through crowds of people who had flocked to Jesus. Just one thing on her mind; grabbing the hem of His garment.
Against all odds. She did it. She touched that hem. She felt the healing.
How faith changes everything
The woman's story teaches us the incredible power of faith. Even when we feel hopeless and alone, faith can move mountains. The woman believed that simply touching Jesus' garment would heal her, and her faith was rewarded.
She knew she didn't need much. Likely hoping to sneak away rejoicing, I imagine her ready to go home and give God glory silently. But Jesus didn't stop there. He acknowledged her. He knew her. He let her know that she mattered to Him. She was fully loved.
I want to encourage you with this quote:
"if you feel like you're hanging on by a thread, let it be the hem of His garment."
There is power, even at the hem of Jesus garment. Just get close to Him. Draw near to Him. Don't let your circumstances pull you from His side. He has what you need, and He is waiting for you to reach out for it.
