First of all, Happy Christmas everyone! If you're anything like me, I'm confident you're spending time with loved ones, exchanging gifts, laughs, smiles, food and games. Christmas is one of the few times everyone's off work, forgetting about the stress of the entire year and actually relaxing, together.
Amidst all the enjoyment, I wanted you to remember a couple things, maybe you have heard them before or maybe this is the first time, and everything I'm about to say is a shock to your system? Well I'm gonna go for it anyway:
3 Things Every Christian Needs To Know About Christmas
1. Jesus wasn't born on 25th December
Say what?! There's no Bible verse, there's no document or birth certificate that tells us the exact date that Jesus was born, but there are some clues as to approximately when He would have been born.
Clue 1: The Shepherds - They actually wouldn't have been out with their sheep in December, it's way too cold! But shepherds would have been out during the Autumn months.
Clue 2: Jesus' Baptism & Death - We have to do a bit of math for this one. Luke 3:23 tells us that Jesus started His ministry at about thirty years of age. We don't know when His birthday was but we do know that He ministered three and a half years from His baptism. (See Numbers 4:1-3, priests served from the age of thirty.) We also know that Jesus died 31 A.D. in Spring during passover. So if you count three and a half years backwards, you get Autumn 27 A.D.
2. Santa is not your Saviour
Sounds silly but some people treat him like he is. Every Christmas advert I've seen over the holiday period points to the legend of Saint Nicholas, I haven't once seen anything about Jesus. Actually there was this one advert where a girl said to her friend, "I'm sorry you have to share your day with Jesus", in a very disappointed way. That shocked me, because I know that if you have the privilege of sharing anything with Jesus that can only mean blessings! I just wish someone could tell her.
Don't make the same mistake of caring about the things that aren't even real so much you miss the point. Irrespective of the day or when people choose to celebrate, Jesus should be lifted up in our homes, in our families and in our lives. He came to this earth as a baby, He grew in wisdom and stature, He was favoured by God and man. He ministered to the needs of those around Him and fulfilled His mission of conquering death, hell and the grave to save every single one of us. If that never happened, what would life be? Nothing!
Luke 2:52 - And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.
3. Christmas is the perfect time of year to share Jesus with others
Children are growing up in a world where Jesus is being trampled out. If the media don't say it, if they don't learn it at school, if their parents don't care about it, where would this children ever learn about the truth? That's where you come in.
Christmas opens doors for Christians. Instead of jumping on the Santa bandwagon, (I'm always skeptical of a name that's also an anagram for Satan,) let the people around you see Jesus, hear about Jesus and learn about Jesus!
I'll admit it, you may well get shot down and rejected but at least you gave it a shot and tried!
Isaiah 9:6 - For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
